Hugo Tate Cover HUGO TATE: Launch Party at Gosh!

We’re excited to announce that we’ve teamed up with our friends at London’s mighty Gosh! Comics to throw a launch party for Nick Abadzis’ long-awaited Hugo Tate collection! Taking place on Saturday 12th May between 7-9PM, be sure to come share a drink with Eisner award-winner Nick Abadzis (flying in from Brooklyn especially!), who will be signing copies of books for readers.

From the Gosh! website:

Hugo Tate began in the late ‘80s Deadline magazine, a ship captained by 2000AD’sBrett Ewins and Steve Dillon that was not only the birthplace of Tank Girl but also ran reprints of excellent indie comics from the USA like Love & Rockets and Evan Dorkin’s Milk & Cheese. “It’s hard to explain in a couple of sentences what Hugo Tate is about exactly,” says Abadzis, “But he was a stick-man who, as he acquired experiences during the run of the strip, slowly evolved into a more figurative character. It’s the sort of visual metaphor that could only work in comics.”

Click on the text to read their whole announcement of the event. Also available at the launch will be the ultra-limited bookplate edition of the book, which, outside of the Blank Slate webstore, will be the only place readers will be able to get their hands on one. Currently, Hugo fans are voting on said Hergé-inspired bookplate design over on Nick’s official Facebook Page for the book. Be sure to cast your vote today! We’ll see you on the 12th.

Nelson Week2 NELSON WEEK: 19th 27th November 2011

To celebrate the release of Nelson, we’re announcing that Saturday 19th to Friday 25th of November is officially NELSON WEEK. Starting at Leeds’ Thought Bubble festival, we’ll be rampaging back down to London leaving a trail of comics excellence in our wake.

19th & 20th November 2011: Thought Bubble Festival
Armouries Drive, Leeds, Yorkshire

Kicking off events at Thought Bubble on the 19th and 20th, the Blank Slate table will be buzzing with Nelson activity, including a signing rota featuring over half the book’s contributors. Appearing alongside German superstars Mawil and Uli Oesterle, it’s going to be one big unmissable Eurocomics celebration. In addition to that, the scholarly Dan Berry will be hosting a panel talk with contributors Duncan Fegredo, Sarah McIntyre, Kate Brown and Editors Rob Davis and Woodrow Phoenix on the 19th at 11:00AM in Bury Theatre.

22nd November 2011, 6PM-7PM: The Cartoon Museum (as part of COMICA)
35 Little Russell St,  London, WC1A 2HH

Next up is a night at London’s The Cartoon Museum, where contributors and invited guests will be ogling the collection of original art from the book that curator Anita O’Brien has put on display over drinks. If you’re interested in an invite, please contact us at mail@blankslatebooks.co.uk – these are very scarse but we’d love to hear from you!

24th November 2011, 6PM-7PM: Forbidden Planet Megastore
179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, WC2H 8JR

On the 24th November, we’ll be taking Rob Davis, Woodrow Phoenix, Warren Pleece, Gary Northfield, Simone Lia and Tom Humberstone to the Forbidden Planet Megastore for a signing. All books bought on the night will see 100% of Forbidden Planet’s profit going to Shelter!

25th November 2011, 6PM onwards: Gosh!
1 Berwick Street, London, W1F 0DR

Finally, we end the campaign in style with a huge public launch party at Gosh! on the 25th. Josh and the team at Gosh! have been absolutely amazing in their support of the book, offering 100% of their profits on all copies of the book they sell – including the exclusive-to-Gosh! limited-to-200 Frank Quietly Bookplate Edition. There will be drinks, a chance to get your book signed by the Editors, Roger Langridge, Sarah McIntyre, Rian Hughes and many more (to be announced), games, a mini-exhibition of original art and much more.

We can’t wait! Where will we see you on Nelson Week?

Love German comics? Well, do we have a treat for you! This November, we’ll be bringing Mawil and Uli Oesterle to the UK for a series of events in association with Comica and Thought Bubble festivals. Just in time for the long-awaited English-language release of Uli’s Hector Umbra.

Friday November 18th – Q&A and Signing at Gosh!
Gosh! 1 Berwick Street, London, W1F 0DR

The fun starts with a Q&A and signing at Gosh! in London on the 18th of November where Mawil and Uli will be talking to Resonance FM and Panel Borders’ Alex Fitch as part of Comica celebrations.

Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th November  - Thought Bubble Festival!
Armouries Drive, Leeds,  LS10 1LT

Immediately following the Gosh! event, we’ll be bundling the entire team in a vehicle (clown-car style) and heading up to Thought Bubble on the 19th and 20th, where visitors will be able to meet Uli and Mawil at the Blank Slate table all weekend. They’ll be signing and reclining along with a whole host of Blank Slaters, including most of the Nelson contributors, our Chalk Marks young guns, and more!

Monday 21st November  - Laydeez do Comica
The Sewing Room, The Rag Factory, 16-18 Heneage Street, London E1 5LJ

Finally, we’ll be hurtling back down to London for an appearance at the special Comica edition of Laydees do Comics. After last month’s Luchadoras talk with myself and French translator Judith Taboy, we can’t wait to return with a second helping of Eurocomics goodness. Mawil and Uli will be participating in a truly international affair, giving special presentations of their work alongside Canadian Sarah Leavitt and American MK Czerwiec.
