Trains are Mint – Oliver East

ISBN 9781906653002
Hardcover – 122 pages – Colour

Oliver East is one of the best known names in the vibrant British small press scene, with his Trains Are Mint series using an artist’s eye to spot out the many elements which make up the everyday world around us but which we often simply tune out and don’t notice, spotted as he travels around Manchester, all detailed with some lovely artwork. This is his first large collection of his work; you can learn more about Oli from his own blog here.

“Oliver East has produced one of the most unique works to come out of the UK small press scene and one that I believe has a chance of crossing over to a much wider audience. His comic forgoes word balloons and the text and speech is all written in Oliver’s own longhand superimposed upon the images. Essentially this is a diary of walks along the train tracks between Manchester and Blackpool in the northwest of England.

The story is told in deceptively simple watercolours that many will see as childlike (somewhat like the work of a young John Porcellino) although in fact they convey not only the narrative but also the spontaneity of sketches – which seems highly appropriate to a diary. It also serves as eyewitness to what modern Britain is like behind the tourist posters, showing the everyday lives of small towns and people, and the often deep drabness at their centre, it reminds me in feel of the films of Shane Meadows,” Kenny Penman, director Forbidden Planet International and publisher of Blank Slate Books.

“On the Road becomes On the Track as Oliver tramps, traipses, strolls and slogs from station to station… A unique use of comics, almost a time capsule of the unrecorded, everyday provinces,” Paul Gravett, organiser of the ICA Comics festival and author of numerous books including Great British Comics.

We Can Still Be Friends – Mawil

Berlin-based cartoonist Markus Witzel, who goes by the pen name of Mawil, has established a reputation in Europe for his cataloguing of the awkwardness of relationships, especially with the opposite sex, but always with some terrific humour throughout, earning him an Icom Prize in 1998 and an international reputation among the comics community. We’ve featured some of Mawil’s work previously in some free comics inserts in the FPI catalogue and we are delighted to be able to offer this English translation of a brilliant European comics creator; Mawil has his own website (in English as well as German) here.

“Beautiful cartooning that captures the energy, awkwardness and freedom of youth and romantic infatuation,” Joe Matt – author Spent & Peepshow

“If only Mawil was as good with the girls as he is a cartoonist then we wouldn’t have these fun stories about how he isn’t any good with the girls. Which is good for us readers, I guess, and if Mawil’s adolescent love life had to suffer for the greater good, I’m okay with that. Thank you, Mawil,” Jeffrey Brown – author Funny Misshapen Body and Clumsy

Berlin and That – Oliver East

OUT NOW
ISBN 9781906653071
168 pages
Colour Hardcover

This third book completes Oli East’s loose trilogy of travel and observational comics using the Train lines of North West Britain, and now Berlin, as his guides.

Oli has a unique art style, as he came to comics from fine art and without knowing the conventions of comics has created his own language. At times difficult but always memorable these are comics
stretching the enevelope of the artform.

In this volume Oli traverses Berlin and makes for the Polish border, armed with no German and a dodgy cut-up map. Adventures ensue. The book has contributions by 58 other artists and friends – some well known – Guy Garvey of Elbow – and some guys Oli knows from down the pub. This book will be an event in the art world in 2010.

• The first two Trains are… Mint books have gathered a devoted following who are fanatical about Oli’s work. His social observation and lovely art has been called a type of ‘new fogeyism’. His first book Trains are…Mint was nominated for the highly prestigious Indy comics award, the Ignatz prize. The only UK nomination in the last 2 years.
