Louise Evans originally trained in fashion design and millinery. She has brought many of the skills learnt through years of work as a couture dress maker to the world of character design. From her studio in North Wales, Felt Mistress has created a legion of felt characters for the best part of a decade, collaborating with a variety of artists including Jon Burgerman, Ben Newman, Pete Fowler and Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals. Her primary collaborator is the illustrator Jonathan Edwards. Her work and Jonathan’s has been exhibited all over the world in cities including Osaka, Los Angeles, Berlin and London. In 2010, the couple presented a Christmas display that occupied several windows at Selfridges Oxford Street store and an interior gallery space. In 2013 the Welsh-born couple’s finally exhibited in their homeland with a show called the Hiber-Nation. In October 2014 they showed an all-new collection of creatures “The Glorious Flock” at Sage Gateshead, a collection of 37 3D pieces and 27 framed pieces.
A 400 page retrospective of her work, “Creature Couture – the Art of Felt Mistress” was published by BSB in December 2012, but Louise has already created another 100 or more pieces since then! How are we supposed to keep up?
