BCA Nominee 300pxw British Comic Awards: Nominations!

The British Comic Awards is a brand new initiative to annually celebrate the very best in British comics, aiming to commend and highlight the best stories told by writers and illustrators over the past twelve months. In their own words: “Our awards recognise the finest examples of creativity, ingenuity, skill and originality in sequential storytelling in all genres and formats. We don’t distinguish between printed work and digital, or between published and self-published work; our only criteria is that the creator(s) be from the UK.”

We’re very pleased to report that our books have received three nominations this year.

Nominated in the category of “Best Book” is Blank Slate’s own Nelson, which was also nominated earlier this year for an Eisner Award.

It’s here! The very limited edition Golden Tippy Crazylabel vinyl toy!

Boxtop2 Felt Mistress Creature Couture: Golden Tippy!

As if a fantastic 400-page Felt Mistress book isn’t quite enough for us, Blank Slate has teamed up with the designer vinyl company Crazylabel to bring you yet more amazing and delicious treats! Crazylabel’s previous collaboration with Jonathan Edwards yielded the smash hit Inspector Cumulus figure, and now Crazylabel is producing a vinyl version of the Felt Mistress’ sidekick, Tippy Winkles, for release later this year. As soon as we heard about this, we had an idea: an exclusive Blank Slate variant edition of vinyl Tippy to accompany the release of Felt Mistress: Creature Couture. Woodrow, Jonathan and Louise put their heads together and came up with this: a special Gold Tippy!

Goldtippy+standard Felt Mistress Creature Couture: Golden Tippy!

This variant, golden Tippy is 10cm tall with articulated head and arms, and wearing a black scarf (the scarf isn’t pictured here, but we promise he will be wearing one). He is packaged in a variant box designed by Woodrow Phoenix. He is limited to 250 pieces and is only available through Blank Slate when you buy Felt Mistress: Creature Couture.

Hugo Tate: The (un)Official Soundtrack

Untitled 2 Hugo Tate: The (un)Official Soundtrack

Nick Abadzis’ “first magnum opus” Hugo Tate officially goes on general release in the UK and Ireland this week. With a few copies popping up already in Britain and Ireland’s best comic shops, readers have been getting in touch to let us know how much they’re enjoying the collected classic. Originally appearing in seminal cross-cultural comics mag Deadline, we thought it would be only appropriate if Nick provided us with a soundtrack playlist for the book.

From the Battle of the Planets theme to Public Image Limited, from Phyllis Dillon to Nick’s admitted hero Iggy Pop, this playlist is not to be missed, much like the book itself. Those of you with Spotify can access the eclectic playlist here. Or alternatively, the whole thing can be streamed below.

Available in US and Canadian comic shops next week, Hugo Tate is currently available in the Blank Slate webstore for £14.99 now. As a special treat, all web orders come with a signed bookplate while stocks last.

COVER 238x300 Felt Mistress Art Book Coming this Winter!

Introducing… Felt Mistress: Creature Couture!

The rumours are true! Not only are we excited to be able to announce our very first art book, but also to say that it’s with the amazing Felt Mistress (aka Louise Evans) and her long-time collaborator Jonathan Edwards. Coming this Winter, readers will get the chance to own well over 500 of her best (and often sharply dressed) creations in a 400-page hardcover book loaded with over 1,500 photographs, character information, original art and more. If you’re an ultra-obsessed felt fan like us, you’ll also be delighted to read interviews with celebrated collaborators such as Jon Burgerman, Pete Fowler, Jon Knox, Nobrow’s Alex Spiro and Sam Arthur and more.

We can’t wait until November 17th, where we will be advance debuting the book at Thought Bubble ahead of a big old launch party in London.

For those who can’t wait, we have some great pre-order offers for you.

Offer 1: until August 1st, early birds can pre-order the book itself for  £26.99 (down from £29.99).

Offer 2: teaming up with vinyl toy company extraordinaire Crazylabel, we’ve also produced a limited Blank Slate-exclusive edition toy of Felt Mistress’ signature creature, Tippy*. Limited to just 250, all pre-orderers of the special Golden Tippy edition will get the book + a gold colourway of Tippy with box art designed by editor Woodrow Phoenix (of Nelson fame).

But that’s not all. Pre-orderers of either option all have the chance to win the Felt Ticket, which will be inserted randomly by the creatures inside one copy of the book. What does the winner of the Felt Ticket get, I hear you ask? Why, they get to take home a creature of their very own, and none other than Elspeth, Creature Couture’s cover star.

Exciting huh? Head over to our official Felt: Mistress Creature Couture for more info. We should extend a huge thank you to the kindly Mr Paddy Steer for allowing us to use his music in the trailer! You can find his music online at or you can do the right thing and buy it over on iTunes.

* Crazy label are still working away at producing Tippy as of writing, but here’s an exclusive sneak-peek at the prototype model. More pictures coming soon!

Nelson Authors Interviewed for Brazilian TV

wdsimglobo1600 Nelson Authors Interviewed for Brazilian TV

Do you know why Brazilian sports television is better? Their coverage of London 2012 will feature comics. No, you aren’t reading that incorrectly: it’s 100% true. Brilliant, huh?

Yesterday, SporTV’s London correspondant Marcelo Barreto stopped by the Detonator studio to interview Woodrow Phoenix and Simone Lia about Nelson. As part of the channel’s Olympics coverage, the channel are delving into London’s literary scene, interviewing all kinds of authors about their work.

We’re hoping to grab a copy of the footage when it airs during the games. Until then, Woodrow tells us that they covered a wide range of comics, from the depictions of London in the book, to their experiences of the city, The Olympic Park and Nelson representing the plurality of voices within the UK comics scene.

Still haven’t read the (ahem, Eisner-nominated) book? It’s available now in the Blank Slate webstore. If you have, be sure to let the newly-announced British Comic Awards committee know.

From the Festival website:

Join the editors and a selection of artists from behind this beautifully-rendered, Eisner nominated, graphic novel.Nelson tells the story of one woman’s life from birth in 1968 to the present day. Each creator individually details a single event or moment of protagonist Nel Baker’s life before handing over to the next artist, resulting in a vast narrative told via yearly snapshots. Part exquisite corpse, part relay race, Nelson spans decades of British history and combines a myriad of stylistic approaches in a single, compelling graphic novel.

Blank Slate will be at TCAF 2012. Come say hello to the fabulous Mr Joe Decie and Darryl Cunningham and buy some comics from us on the first floor of the Toronto Public Library this weekend. If you buy enough, we might even be able to afford to fly back home to the UK!

The gruesome twosome dynamic duo will be signing copies of their very own The Accidental Salad and Psychiatric Tales. If you ask them nicely enough, they’ll probably sign all our books by other creators too.

See you there?

Dying to know the inspirations behind Nelson? Or how Rob feels about the book’s Eisner nomination? Think you can get Rob to break diplomacy by asking him which his favourite  contributions were? Let us know and we’ll grill him for you.
